Just about to start our Christmas Holidays but first... here are the results from our traditional survey we carry out after the first term with our ESO  Year 1 students.
Thanks to all who kindly participated...

MERRY CHRISTMAS FOR EVERYBODY

It is the end of the first term and the end of 2014. Many things have happened and many more are yet to come. We would like to wish a Happy New Year and all the best for 2015.
Here is a famous TV commercial in the UK made by a well-known supermarket chain. In it we can see that the Christmas spirit can survive really hard times like a war.

CRIME ENGLISH

This kind of vocabulary is not very common in English lessons until we get to higher levels. As this year we are teaching Bachillerato students, it is high time we deal with this specific vocabulary.
Below is a simple list with the crime involved and the person who commits it. We hope we only have to know it to understand TV shows like CSI or movies and not in our real life...

ACOGEMOS PROFESORADO EUROPEO

EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES

As every September 26th we celebrate the European Day of Languages.
There is an official website with all the relevant information.

Here is a beautiful drawing by Rafael Malmagro (ESO Year 2) to illustrate this importante day for languages.

Having a universal language like English can be great on many occasions but there is a downside: other languages are quickly disappearing.

In the last years there have been several movements to preserve these "endangered" languages around the globe. Here are a few examples:

* The Rosetta Project is a global collaboration of language specialists and native speakers working to build a publicly accessible digital library of human languages.

* The Endangered Languages Project tries to support language documentation and preservation around the world.

EDUCATIONAL APPS

Everyday we get more into new technologies applied to education. Recently I found some interesting apps that offer free courses and on-line learning (the buzz word for a long time!!). They offer lessons based on video, documents, off-line reading, presentations, questionnaires, etc. This is ideal as you can go your own pace, according to your motivation, free time, needs, etc.

Have a look at:
- KHAN ACADEMY (virtually any topic from elementary to college level)
- COURSERA (more oriented to university)
- UDEMY (major focus on entrepreneurship and lifestyle)
- iTUNES U (Apple is creating a huge database with courses offered by prestigious universities around the world)

You will see that the possibilities are endless.

These days in our English lessons we are talking a lot about the e-PEL. Our aim is for students to create their own digital portfolio where they can track their learning progress in English.
Here is a document for the first steps...

Learning a foreign language today is so easy with new technologies. The web is full of resources to help us in every little thing (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, listening, speaking, cultural references, etc.)
Today we present a simple document with only some of these site specifically designed to learn English on-line. We hope they improve your competence in English.

2014-15 LANGUAGE ASSISTANTS

Unfortunately this year the help from Language Assistants is being reduced in schools with fewer than 10 bilingual groups like ours. We will only have 6 hours a week distributed in two days. We will share our Language Assistant with the elementary school  in Corrales (they will also have 6 hours a week).
This new school year there will be 742 Language Assistants placed in Andalucía (138 through the Ministry of Education and 604 through the Andalusian Education Department).
Long are those days when only in Andalucía there were more than 1,300!! We expect them on October 1st until May 30th.

WELCOME DEAR GUESTS!!

On Tuesday 17th we welcome some special guests at our school. Maximiliam Dreger, a Spanish teacher from Germany working in Gerabronn (Germany). He is coming to get to know our school and have some talk about our future exchange programme next year.
These days too one German student (Fenja) is spending a few days with her Spanish partner and she will come to school some days to see how it feels like... (these days, really hot!!!).
Besides, at the end of July 7 students from our school have been invited to visit their German partners for a few days. Lucky them!! Sure they will have a blast in Gerabronn!!

TRAVELLING TIME

These days ESO Year 3 bilingual students are presenting some digital posters using GLOGSTER.EDU . This is a free site which allows teachers to register and have different account for students, groups, etc.
The virtual posters can include text, audio, pictures, video and links to other websites. Each pair of students have one British landmark to "advertise" to the rest of the class. In general, they have presented some great stuff.
Here is one example.

NEW WAYS TO LEARN ENGLISH

Publishing companies are trying hard to find new ways to engage young people to learn and study English. The traditional course book, although still valid, is getting old in this digital era.
Here is a proposal by MacMillan: Pulitzer. Watch the video to find out more...
And this is only one example.... What will the future bring in the next few years?

LOOKING FOR THE NEW "SPIELBERG"!!

Most people like films and going to the movies but it is so hard to make a film! Or not??
Today with new technologies almost anyone can do something to become a film director. I tried myself and here is the result: my first movie called "Long time no see".
This is the international premier and I would like our students to do their own project. It is very simple, go to Dvolver moviemaker and follow the instruction. It is piece of cake. Then send us the link and we will upload here the best movies. Hurry up, the next Oscars ceremony is coming!!

BACHILLERATO BILINGUE

DO WE NEED TO LEARN A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE??

This is the typical question my students make when they are bored or tired.
When you have apps like the one on the video below (WORD LENS)  it is difficult to answer this question. It is amazing how you can understand written messages in different languages only using your smartphone.
I am really worried about my future career as an English teacher!!!
