GOOD-BYE KALISTA!

Sadly Kalista, one of our Language Assistants, had to go back home in the States. She had an operation in her ankle after a fall and the recovery process is going to be long. It is such a pity but the important thing now is that she gets better.

Unfortunately, we will get no substitute for her so we only have Leah. That means that some of the teachers and groups who had Kalista in their lessons will be now assigned to Leah and some groups will have no language assistant at all.

IMPROVING LISTENING

When learning a foreign language listening is usually one of the most difficult skills. Why? Well, there are many reasons for that:

- On many occasions we have no visual support like face expressions, pictures, video, etc.
- The speed is so fast we cannot understand so well
- We generally are embarrassed to ask for repetitions

This is why it is so important to listen to native people speaking the foreign language.

Here is a useful link to a website with plenty of audio recordings (in many languages) and they can be searched according to different criteria like level of difficulty, gender and age of the speaker, duration, etc.

As an example here is a B1 level audio about baseball:

Se trata de iEduex (Enternational Education Exchange). Este organismo ofrece cursos en el extranjero y según algunos criterios pueden llegar a becar parcialmente a los mejores alumnos.

MEET LEAH

Hi there! My name is Leah Shedrow and I am so excited to be a new language assistant in Corrales! I am from Atlanta, Georgia in the U.S. and just graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Journalism, focusing on film and media studies! I love film and creating stories and different worlds. I also minored in Spanish and studied abroad in Valencia two years ago, which made me realize my passion for the Spanish language and my infinite love for Spain! The experience in Valencia inspired me to return to Spain to explore my love of teaching and fulfill my dream of being immersed in Spanish life once again! I also developed a desire to travel and learn as many languages as possible, and have taught myself Italian and some Hebrew since that experience.

Apart from traveling, languages, and education, I absolutely love music! I took piano lessons for 10 years, participated in orchestra for 8 years, performed in many plays throughout middle school and high school, and sang in a girls group and choir in high school! I continued with choir for a year in college and also sang in an a cappella jazzs group. Overall I love the arts and am always happy writing songs or other stories!

I’m very happy to be placed in Huelva and at Juan Antonio Pérez Mercader and can’t wait to get started!

MEET KALISTA

Hello! My name is Kalista and I am from the United States. I grew up in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Both sides of my family are from the U.S. and many of them also live in Arkansas. I have an older sister, a younger brother, and a dog (boxer-mix) named Emma. Jonesboro is a fairly small town and is home to Arkansas State University. I graduated from Arkansas State University in May of 2018 with degrees in Communication Studies and World Languages and Cultures for Spanish. I fell in love with Spanish and learning about different cultures. My university had students from all over the world, so I was able to learn a little bit about their cultures while still in the U.S.

I enjoy meeting people from around the world and learning about their lifestyles, cultures, and perspectives. I also love to travel, and it is what I would like to do for the next few years. Three years ago, I spent a month studying abroad in Costa Rica and my love of cultures and traveling is one of the reasons that I am pursuing the opportunity to become a Culture and Language Assistant in Spain. I also love teaching and sharing my knowledge with others. I would like to pursue teaching as a career.

Some of my hobbies include spending time outdoors, camping, hiking, and kayaking. This was a large part of my life since I grew up in Arkansas. We have beautiful outdoor scenery and many gorgeous lakes and rivers. Some of my other hobbies are yoga and kickboxing. I enjoy going to the gym and staying active.

JISELLE SAYS HI FROM THE USA

Hola!
I have officially been back in California for a little over a week now, it was a long trip but I finally made it. I have been talking about my experience in Spain nonstop and I’m sure my friends and family are starting to get tired of it... haha, but I cannot help myself because it was such an amazing experience. I am grateful for all the teachers and students that I got to meet and interact with over the 8 months and I know Huelva will hold a special place in my heart from now on. I hope you all have a great end to the school year and I wish you all the best of luck. To the students, I hope you continue to be motivated and practice speaking English. To the teachers, you have a difficult job, but I am sure the students appreciate it very much! :)

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Today is World Environment Day, a special day to think about our planet and what we can do to protect and care for it. Our planet is wonderful but humans are making a huge impact on it, in a very negative way. Pollution and global warming are two of the main problems we can mention.

This year there is a big emphasis on plastic pollution in our oceans. Watch this short video to know more about this problem.

BYE FROM MIRNA

"Coming to Spain I didn’t know what to expect and without any knowledge of Spanish I went to a country that is completely different from what I am used to. This was a big learning experience in every way. I am forever grateful to my coordinator who went out of his way to help me with everything. A big thank you to all the teachers who helped me whenever I needed help. And the last but not the least, thank you to all the students who made my days. To the younger ones: I know it was a struggle sometimes and we were both lost at times, not knowing how to understand each other, thank God for Google Translate! :) And to the older ones all I have to say is keep up the good work, it was a pleasure!
I will never forget this experience! I am so happy that I had the pleasure of meeting every single one of you. Thank you for the opportunity, I had a lot of fun! :)

Best regards!"

NEWS REPORTING

These days ESO Year 3 students are seeing how to report a crime. Once they have mastered the vocabulary and the basic grammar structures (especially the passive voice), it is high time to play the role of a reporter and tell the audience about a crime or emergency situation.

Here is a couple of good examples to start with. Check out a video about a fire in California and another video of a traffic accident in Hong Kong.

HAPPY 5 DE MAYO

Our Language Assistant Jiselle has prepared an interesting bulletin board with information on a special celebration "5 de Mayo".

Here is a great video from National Geographic with more facts and information on this festivity.

WILLKOMMEN FREUNDE!!

Andalusian autonomy commemoration

A day just like today, 28 years ago, Andalusian citizens voted for autonomy. To commemorate this event, our school's 4th grade students have been working in a serie of posters studying the historical evolution of Andalusia since the 18th century. The end of the Ancien Regime, the 1812 Cadiz Constitution, industrialization, Republic, Civil War, Dictatorship and Democracy... our students now have a wide and comprehensive perspective of Andalusian history. They worked very hard, and here you have what they did... Nice work everybody!
